A Quick Primer On Longboard Bearings
Bearings are those metal shields that contain 7 or 8 metal balls inside. They have nylon or rubber seals to keep the contents in place. What bearings do is they help connect your wheels to the axles and help them roll fast and smooth.
The American Bearing Manufacturers Association has created a rating system so riders can easily check and see the tolerance of their bearings. The system is called ABEC (Annular Bearing Engineering Committee). They number it from ABEC 1 to ABEC 9+.
Here are some quick bearings characteristics:
ABEC 1: cheapest, not very precise, not very fast
ABEC 3: still very cheap, not the best roll quality
ABEC 5: standard speed at reasonable cost
ABEC 7: very fast, expensive
ABEC 9: insanely fast, great for downhill racing, most expensive
Other manufacturers also use rating systems like skate rating. As you can see, the fastest longboard bearings will very likely be those that are ABEC 7, ABEC 9 or skate-rated.
This is exactly what we’re going to explore next!
1. Bones Reds Bearings
Bones is a well-known manufacturer. This Reds bearings pack is one of the most popular and reliable out there. It’s skate-rated and definitely fast.
You don’t have to worry about your old longboard or second-hand boards getting too slow. With these bearings, any old boards will be as fast as new.
What we like about these is that they come pre-lubricated with speed cream. The rubber shield is non-contact and removable. That makes cleaning super easy.
With high precision bearings, you’ll typically have to clean them all the time. Because any tiny amount of dirt or moisture could ruin the precision. You’ll be glad to know that maintaining these Reds bearings is a simple task.
And for only $13 bucks? Seriously, it doesn’t get any better than this. So, definitely check these out if you’re interested.
2. Yellow Jacket Premium Pro Longboard Bearings
Next up, we’d totally recommend checking out Yellow Jacket bearings. These are pro longboard bearings at a super affordable price. They cost from $15 to $20.
The bearings are ABEC 9 rated. If you want an even faster and smoother roll experience, ABEC 11 is your way to go!
These are also super long-lasting. You don’t have to change your bearings quite often. They minimize friction really well. What we appreciate about these specific bearings are those color seals. They guard dirt, dust from building up extremely well.
Downhill racing is absolutely no big deal with these bearings. They can be quite noisy at times. However, if you’re fine with this, these are super nice and fast bearings for longboarding.
3. Heady Shake Pro Skateboard Bearings
You’ve gotta check these bad boys out! They are coated with premium titanium that’s super durable. These bearings are not only great for longboards, but they also do incredibly well with any other types of boards like skateboards, cruisers, or roller skates.
These are ultra-fast and ultra-smooth. You’ll get a true speed demon that can spin more than 3 minutes on one push. Super powerful.
Another incredible thing about these is that they are extremely quiet. If you don’t like those squeaky wheel noises, these bearings are your go-to choice.
They come pre-lubricated with high-quality speed oil. For a price of around $20, we think they are totally worth every penny! HIghly recommend looking more into these!
4. Fireball Dragon Precision Bearings
You can’t miss these Fireball Dragon bearings. They’re cheaper than Heady Shake and Yellow Jacket. However, they perform incredibly well. We like racing downhill on these just as much as the other bearings on the list.
You can even use these on skateboards, penny boards, scooters, or even some suitcases. They’re very versatile. On these fireball bearings are dual labyrinth shields. They keep dirt out effectively.
The steel materials that make up the bearings are also long-lasting. Another great thing is that these are totally skate-rated. You’ll pretty much get a full package with the bearings. A tiny point we notice, however, is that the bearings can be quite slow at first.
But, as all the gears get into place over time, they’ll get to their full potential and provide a very enjoyable roll experience.
5. Zealous Bearings
Zealous is another huge name in the house. Their bearings are fast, smooth, and reliable. Their friction spec is one of the lowest in the industry: 0.003%. That’s nearly frictionless! You’ll fly like there’s nothing stopping you on your way.
What we like about these bearings are the added spacers. They help tremendously when you replace or change any small parts. You won’t lose any tiny shields or balls. Really great job!
The inner and outer rubber shields will prevent debris or dirt from penetrating. Sometimes, the bearings do make rattling sounds. That’s bearable, in our opinion. Although they are more on the pricey side (around $20), we think they do a pretty awesome job with all the power they have.
6. esKape Skateboard Longboard Bearings
If you’re looking for longboard bearings that are super cheap, check these out! They’re only $8. They work with all types of skateboards and longboards. Plus, the manufacturer claims that they are ABEC 9.
The shields on these are plastic and steel. You can’t ask for much with such a cheap price. We say this is pretty acceptable. The nice thing about these is they do roll pretty fast.
They have pre-lubricated the bearings for the smooth ready-to-roll experience. The same thing we experience with these bearings is the rattling sounds every now and then. It doesn’t bother us very much, but we think it’s worth sharing with you.
Although it’s cheap, it doesn’t lose its quality. These esKape bearings can certainly deliver!
And there you have it! Those are the 6 fastest longboard bearings from our research and experience. If you have around $10, check out Bones Reds, Yellow Jacket, or Fireball Dragon.
If you’ve got $20, see Heady Shake or Zealous. However, if $8 is what your budget allows, we think you’ll love the esKape bearings. Thanks for reading the post today! As always, have fun boarding!
