Bearings are those metal shields that contain 7 or 8 metal balls inside. They have nylon or rubber seals to keep the contents in place. What bearings do is they help connect your wheels to the axles and help them roll fast and smooth.

The American Bearing Manufacturers Association has created a rating system so riders can easily check and see the tolerance of their bearings. The system is called ABEC (Annular Bearing Engineering Committee). They number it from ABEC 1 to ABEC 9+.

Here are some quick bearings characteristics:

ABEC 1: cheapest, not very precise, not very fast

ABEC 3: still very cheap, not the best roll quality

ABEC 5: standard speed at reasonable cost

ABEC 7: very fast, expensive

ABEC 9: insanely fast, great for downhill racing, most expensive

Other manufacturers also use rating systems like skate rating. As you can see, the fastest longboard bearings will very likely be those that are ABEC 7, ABEC 9 or skate-rated.

This is exactly what we’re going to explore next!

On the market now, you’ll usually find cruiser boards measure from 25” to over 46” in length. Compared to longboards, this deck length is a bit shorter. Compared to regular popsicle-shaped skateboards, this length is usually longer.

Unlike choosing the right deck length for snowboards, you don’t have to worry too much about the cruiser deck length being too short or long for your body type. It generally boils down to your preference.

A shorter deck will allow you to make quicker and sharper turns. Whereas a longer deck will be perfect for carving at higher speeds. If you’re still confused, choose the mid-30s.

In terms of width, most cruiser boards nowadays are around 7” to 9” wide. There’s a lot of legroom for you or your kids. So, you should be fine.

Short cruising board: 25” – 32”

This range is perfect for young and shorter riders. It’s also a great choice if you’re just starting out with skating. You can also get a short one if you’re tall and skillful with your cruising ability.
